About Bernie

A 96 year young Montreal artist, who graduated with distinction in Art History and Studio Art from Concordia University in 1993. She also studied painting at John Abbott College, at Stewart Hall in Pointe-Claire, and - before that - in the private studios of Eric Goldberg in Montreal and Henri Masson in Ottawa.
Her paintings echo the Symbolist - Surrealist tradition: they emerge from an inner vision, rising from the subconscious. Rooted in a dream world, the works invite open interpretation; their deliberate ambiguity encourages a dialogue between viewer and image.
Most of the paintings draw inspiration from blind drawings and sketches of the human body in motion. By setting aside strict visual accuracy, she captures the energy and spirit that animate the moving figure - a celebration of human experience.
In her more recent work, textured surfaces create a timeless, otherworldly space in which the body continues to move and transform.
